Hello Future Best Self!
Resilient people go to therapy and work themselves. It’s sort of like weight lifting for your mind. Every session helps change the structure and function of your brain. Small changes add up to big changes over time. These changes can carry over to future generations and make the world more compassionate and brighter. Thank you for doing your part!
Do you think that deep seated issues might be holding you back?
If that is the case, you are not alone.
We can not keep denying the root cause that is creating unhealthy ripples in our lives! It is costing us too much in regards to money, health, and really living fully. Lucky for us, we as a society are starting to become aware and focused on the underlying trauma. Since 2020, more people than ever before started bravely digging deep and work towards resolving their deep seated issues that were holding them back.
This ACE study shines a light on how our bodies and minds are connected: The CDC and Kaiser Permanente surveyed almost 18,000 people since 1994. They found that exposure to childhood trauma changes brain development and function, nervous system function, our immune system, hormones, and changes in our DNA methylation. People who have experienced trauma die twenty years sooner from the top 6 leading causes of death including heart disease, cancers, diabetes, drug overdoses, accidents, and suicide. This study asked the participants about their history of exposure to adverse childhood experiences such as physical, emotional, or sexual abuse, physical or emotional neglect, a caregiver being mentally ill, dependent on drugs or alcohol, incarceration, separation or divorce and/or domestic violence. They correlated their Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) scores against health outcomes. The higher your ACE score the worse your health outcomes.
Here is what they found:
67% of people in the US had at least one ACE
1 in 8 have 4 or more ACEs.
If you have 4 or more ACES you are: 12x more likely to be suicidal 2.5x more likely to have heart disease, hepatitis 4.5x more likely to have depression and or anxiety
ACE scores of 7 or more are: 3.5x more likely to have lung cancer, heart disease
ACE affects the reward center of the brain making people more likely to become addicted.
MRI’s are showing differences in the amygdala which responds to stress and the hippocampus which stores memories.
ACE inhibits the prefrontal cortex making people more likely to be impulsive while it limits new learning.
Research showed that it did not matter if the person engaged in risky behaviors or not. If they were exposed to ACEs they still had increases chances for cancer and heart disease.
Basically, trauma affects your health more than we thought AND psychotherapy helps you repair and rewire your brain, nervous system, and intamate relationships. As a result, millions of people are going to therapy, getting unstuck, and improving their mental and physical well-being. Body and brain-based psychotherapy are producing results we can clearly see and measure using fMRI images. I love seeing images of the brain before and after therapy, watching new connections form, and seeing the hippocampus grow like an out-of-shape muscle. The brain and body can heal and I am honored to witness this daily.
Are you ready to say goodbye to stress and say hello to your best self? It’s easier than you ever thought to let go of anxiety and fears, so that you have more energy, joy, and authentic connections.
Have a VIBRATE Summer,
